Funds will expand IMPLICIT Interconception Care Screening in New York

March of Dimes, the leader in the fight for the health of all moms and babies, recently announced its latest collaboration with the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York aimed at reducing preterm births and improving maternal and infant health in Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Syracuse. The agency said premature birth is the largest contributor to infant death in the U.S., and pregnancy-related death has more than doubled over the past 25 years.

“According to The National Center for Health Statistics, this year marks the fourth consecutive increase in preterm births after steady declines over the previous seven years,” said Darcy Dreyer, director, maternal-child health. “Among non-Hispanic black women and Hispanic women, the preterm birth rate increase was even greater. March of Dimes is collaborating with the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York to expand evidence-based programs like IMPLICIT to address this alarming trend.”

“We are proud to support the important, comprehensive work led by March of Dimes to improve maternal and infant health outcomes,” said Nora OBrien-Suric, Ph.D., president, the Health Foundation for Western & Central New York. “By using an evidence-based, personalized approach to address the factors that contribute to preterm birth rates and low birth weight, these efforts will have a far-reaching impact on the health of mothers and babies across Western and Central New York.”

The Health Foundation for Western & Central New York’s grant will support March of Dimes’ effort to address the urgent health crisis facing mothers and babies in Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Syracuse and provide vital resources to proven interventions that can assist in preventing premature births and maternal and infant mortality.

Programs that will be supported include:

IMPLICIT Expansion grant: Interventions to Minimize Preterm & Low Birth Weight Infants through Continuous Improvement Techniques (IMPLICIT) Interconception Care (ICC) screening model is an evidence-based model that screens mothers of children ages 0-2 at well child visits for modifiable risk factors that cause preterm and low birth weight babies: smoking, depression, contraception use and multivitamin intake. If a mom has a positive screen, an immediate intervention and/or referral is made, with the goal of improving health and future pregnancy outcomes. For an RFP application, email [email protected].
