Pinnacle Community Services cares about the well-being of the community. As the first snowflakes fall, it is assisting others with preparing for the cold of winter. Members of the community are invited to attend “Winter Warming, a Winter Readiness Fair,” from 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 1522 Main St., Niagara Falls.

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York is sponsoring this event, providing free turkey vouchers to the first 100 households to complete a “Passport to Warmth” by visiting all of the tables at the fair.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to receive National Fuel home weatherization kits, find assistance with HEAP applications from NY Connects, and obtain information about no-cost energy-efficiency services from Ivy Lea Construction.

Other features of “Winter Warming” include a mitten tree, crafts for kids, and refreshments.

A number of other organizations will be in attendance to share information and resources on the topic of safety, warmth and health in the winter months.

Kelley Swann, vice president of programs, spoke of the necessity of winter readiness: “Winter in Niagara Falls can be unpredictable but, in general, we know there is likely to be a high snowfall rate and extreme cold temperatures throughout the season. Winter weather is much more than an “inconvenience” for many of our clients at Pinnacle Community Services and in the community – it can be a life or death situation.

“Many of the individuals and families we see struggle to secure food, clothing, and safe, appropriate shelter. Meeting these basic needs can be even more of a challenge through the winter. Particularly, many people in our area are renters, who have little say in the energy efficiency of their homes, but still have the responsibility to pay for heating costs. Many homeowners do not have the financial resources for updating the infrastructures of their homes, or may not know what resources are out there to assist them.”

Since 1895, Pinnacle Community Services has been providing essential services to the community, through prevention and intervention programming in the areas of mental health, domestic violence, runaway and homeless youth, and child abuse and neglect. Its mission statement reads: “Side by Side, Step by Step … we strengthen our community by supporting and empowering individuals and families on their journey.”
