Kiwanis Club of N-W Scholarships awarded

The Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield awarded two $1,000 scholarships at a dinner at G-Macs on June 20. 

Nicole Guldin and Sarah LoCurto, graduating seniors of Niagara-Wheatfield High School, were the recipients of the scholarships. 

Guldin will attend the University at Buffalo, majoring in engineering, with plans to go further in graduate school and obtain a Master’s Degree in business administration. 

LoCurto will attend Duke University, majoring in neuroscience, with plans to obtain a Ph.D. in that particular field. 

The Kiwanis scholarship is awarded based primarily on community service for 50% of the application. LoCurto’s and Guldin’s application listed numerous hours volunteering at various organizations in and out of school. In maintaining superb grades and holding part-time employment, they were ideal candidates for the accolade. 

The Kiwanis members said they very much enjoyed sharing dinner with LoCurto, Guldin and their parents that evening.

Aside from the scholarships, the Kiwanis Club of Niagara-Wheatfield also did some community service this month. 

On June 1, members volunteered with the Town of Niagara’s “Neaten up Niagara,” by plucking garbage along the sides of the town’s roadways. 

On June 13, the club held its physical fitness, get-in-shape-for-summer community service program. Lugging large orange trash bags, the Kiwanis members proceeded to clean up their adopted highway – Ward Road – from Niagara Road to Saunders Settlement Road.

On Monday, June 24, the Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis participated in the Town of Niagara’s “Music Mania Mondays.” The Kiwanis ran the 50/50. The winner took home a prize of $725. 

On July 21, the club will send three kids from the Niagara-Wheatfield elementary schools to a full week of summer camp at Kamp Kiwanis near Rome, New York. The club will also participate in the Wheatfield Family Picnic on Sunday, August 18, with its “Take-a-Book, Share-a-Book, Give-a-Book” project.
