Niagara County: American Cancer Society to hold annual Relay For Life on June 1

Sat, May 25th 2019 09:30 am

On Saturday, June 1, several hundred local residents will join together at Reservoir State Park for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Greater Niagara. The event starts at 2 p.m. with a goal to raise funds and awareness toward a world without cancer. All are welcome to join in this community fun day, which has a superhero theme, entertainment, and a special appearance by Buster Bison.

This year’s schedule of events includes:

  • 2 p.m., opening ceremony
  • 3 p.m., Survivor Luncheon
  • 1-6 p.m., craft fair
  • 3-4 p.m., appearance by Buster Bison
  • 6 p.m., caregiver ceremony
  • 9:30 p.m., luminary ceremony
  • 11 p.m., closing, “Fight Back Ceremony”

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Uniting communities across the globe, it celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and takes action for lifesaving change. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the ACS has invested more than $4.6 billion in research since 1946, and has funded more than 20,000 scientists at more than 1,000 institutions nationwide.

No one understands how vital these services are more than local caregiver Terry Hoffman, wife of Pastor Robert Hoffman of St. Peter Lutheran Church, North Ridge. The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program has been vital to them when traveling to Cleveland Clinic for Robert’s treatments.

The 2019 honorary survivor, Cheryl “Sue” Kulak, is a longtime Relay For Life participant. In the past, she has walked in honor of friends and family who were fighting cancer. This time around, she is on the other side of the fight – and has been an inspiration to the leadership committee.

In addition to the support of the community, Relay For Life of Greater Niagara is also supported by local businesses and organizations. This year’s sponsors include: Guard Contracting, Heatwave Heating and Cooling, ASM Research, Radiology Solutions Associates and Modern Corporation.
