The Niagara County Legislature has designated Niagara County as a “Purple Heart County,” through a resolution that recognizes and honors those who have received the Purple Heart Medal as a result of being wounded or killed in combat.

This new designation came through the efforts by Niagara County Clerk Joe Jastrzemski, who, from the beginning, sought for Niagara County to become a “Purple Heart County.”

“Through working with our veterans, as well as the Veterans Service Agency, we now can proudly and ceremoniously show our gratitude by recognizing these extraordinary men and women who’ve made such great sacrifice,” Jastrzemski said.

The resolution will officially be recognized by the honorable members of Niagara County Legislature on Feb. 19.

“I have the utmost respect and admiration for the men and women who have served our country, and for that reason I strongly believe this designation was necessary so we can honor them in a way they truly deserve,” said Legislator Randy Bradt, R-North Tonawanda, who sits as majority leader for Niagara County Legislature.

The contribution and sacrifice that servicemen and servicewomen from Niagara County have been crucial in preserving the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by all citizens.

When asked about this new designation, Ronald Krul, adjutant of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Niagara Falls Chapter 264, said, “It is extremely gratifying to know that Niagara County is joining other cities and counties across the state and nation with the designation of being a ‘Purple Heart County.’ ” Being identified as a ‘Purple Heart County’ is a marvelous ‘Thank you’ to combat veterans of all wars and a reminder to our community of the sacrifices our military men and women have made for our country's freedom.”

The Military Order of the Purple Heart was formed in 1932 for the protection and common interest of all who have received the decoration. It is composed exclusively of Purple Heart recipients, and is the only veterans service organization comprised strictly of “combat” veterans.
