The Grand Island Central School District will hold a public referendum on Tuesday, Jan. 8, to seek voter approval for a proposed $24,149,626 capital project.
The board voted 6-0 Monday at a special meeting in the Professional Development Room of Grand Island High School to set the vote.
Superintendent of Schools Brian Graham said the district will have two public hearings about the project at locations to be determined between now and the vote date:
•Thursday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m.
•Thursday, Jan. 3, at 6 p.m.
The conceptual budget for the project includes:
•$14,150,900 at Grand Island High School and Connor Middle School. Some of this work would include safety improvements at entrances to both schools.
•$1,614,691 at Charlotte Sidway Elementary School.
•$2,075,862 at William Kaegebein Elementary School.
•$1,011,150 at Huth Road Elementary School.
•The plans also call for $8,660,921 for a multi-sport complex for baseball, softball, and other field sports, as well as associated fencing, sidewalks, and scoreboards.
Graham said should the capital project pass at the polls, the potential tax impact on a home valued at $180,000 would be an estimated $15-$16.
Graham said a 13-minute presentation video describing the project is forthcoming and would be "very similar to what we did in the community forums but with some updated information."
"Right now everything that you have seen in the community forums are concepts," Graham said. "There could be some changes, for sure, in the design process, so if the community gives us permission to move forward, then the design process begins. The concepts that are on the slides from the community forum could be tweaked or changed."
