Erie County Office for People with Disabilities, community partners offer education, supports, advocacy throughout month
The Erie County Office for People with Disabilities is partnering with numerous community agencies throughout the month of October to raise awareness about Disability Awareness Month through education, outreach and community events around Erie County. Each weekday during October, a partner agency will be present from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Downtown Library in Buffalo, with information on services and supports for individuals with disabilities. Organizations including The Arc Erie County, WNY Independent Living, the Epilepsy Association, Deaf Access Services and Parent Network will be represented. Parent Network is also conducting a four-week parenting series throughout the month. In addition, a diversity career fair will be held at the Downtown Library on Oct. 25, while many other conferences, workshops and special presentations will be held this month, as well.
"Disability Awareness Month is a great opportunity to raise public awareness of individuals living with disabilities in our community and talk about the wide variety of services and supports that are available to them," said Executive Director of the Office for People with Disabilities Frank Cammarata III. "It is a very full schedule with items of interest for many people and events are held at different times of the day, so we encourage anyone wishing to learn more to access the full schedule and make plans to join us at any of these events."
Other highlights of Disability Awareness Month include an Autism Services artwork sale and auction on Oct. 5; the NDEAM luncheon at Roswell Park Cancer Institute on Friday, Oct. 19; a symposium on brain health, dementia and Alzheimer's disease on Oct. 23; and the annual Housing & Special Needs Population Conference on Oct. 30.
