HAL to award scholarship on Indigenous Peoples' Day

A scholarship award from the Historical Association of Lewiston to a Tuscarora student will highlight the commemoration of Indigenous Peoples' Day. The award will be presented to Niagara County Community College student Christian Burnham at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at the corner of Center Street and Portage Road in Lewiston.
The public is welcomed to attend the brief ceremony.
HAL Vice President Leandra Collesano will award the scholarship.
The Town and Village of Lewiston are part of a number of cities and towns across the nation that have designated Oct. 8 as a day to recognize and honor the contributions of Native Americans. The relationship of the Tuscaroras and local non-native population has been bonded since the Tuscaroras saved the lives of dozens of Lewiston settlers in the British attack on Lewiston on Dec. 19, 1813, during the War of 1812.
The 205th anniversary of the rescue will be commemorated this year on the morning of Dec. 19 when more than 40 Lewiston-Porter elementary students honor the local natives by singing the new Tuscarora Heroes song in concert at the monument.
