Grand Island Fire Chief Chris Soluri reports that Fuccillo Chevrolet has formed a noteworthy partnership with the Grand Island Fire Co. through a generous donation of $8,500 towards the purchase of special fire prevention giveaway T-shirts. GIFC officers welcome such corporate support and appreciate it.
Meanwhile, Assistant Fire Chief Dan Mathes, fire prevention program coordinator, has arranged for multiagency participation in this year's event, which will include firefighting and EMS displays and related demonstrations by the GIFC, Western New York fire service, and local law enforcement.
Firefighting and EMS teams will visit Grand Island elementary schools on Oct. 9, 10 and 11 to offer lifesaving fire safety tips. Sidway Elementary School students will visit fire headquarters on Friday, Oct. 12, to gain firsthand knowledge of fire company operations and engage in "hands on" safety exercises. A special drawing will reward three winners with custom fire helmet shields. In addition, students will receive entry blanks for the highly anticipated "Ride to School in a Fire Truck'' drawing to be held during open house activities.
A simulated motor vehicle fire as well as a live structure fire demo will show visitors how the firefighters tackle such incidents.
The GIFC Ladies Auxiliary will provide refreshments, including a hamburger-hotdog roast, at a nominal cost, while conducting its ever-popular basket raffle.
Soluri hopes that as many people as possible will set aside some quality time to meet with the GIFC volunteers and friends during the 5 to 8 p.m. open house on Friday, Oct. 12, at fire headquarters on Baseline Road.
