Thursday afternoon, seniors from the Town of Niagara visited the Veterans Memorial Community Park pond for the third annual Town of Niagara Senior Fishing Derby.
While the rules listed it as a competition, everyone attending was really in it for fun and a leisurely couple hours outside fishing.
In past years, Senior Citizens Director Joe Proietti said fish would bite like crazy. This year, attendees had a tougher time catching fish, as the winning total was only three, but everyone agreed, just being outside fishing was the highlight, regardless of fish totals.
There was a tie for first place this year between Bruce Herman and Lou Pastor, who both caught three fish.
There was also a tie for third place, with one fish caught, between Jerry Townsend, Charlotte Lachant and Cleon Canon.
Winners were given gift cards to Taylor's Tap and Grill along Niagara Falls Boulevard, as well as gift cards to Panera Bread and Tops Friendly Markets. Each participant also left with a $15 Mighty Taco credit.
Following the fishing, the group enjoyed a hot dog lunch with chips and water. Participants were also handed commemorative T-shirts.
At the end, Proietti said, "Thank you all for coming and I wish the fish were biting a little more."
