Lewiston Council on the Arts announces 2018 schedule of events

Fresh from organizing the second annual "A Taste of Lewiston," the Lewiston Council on the Arts has released the rest of its culturally enriching - and entertaining - lineup for 2018.
LCA Executive Director Irene Rykaszewski said, "We are very proud to celebrate 52 years of art in Lewiston. The Art Council has been an important part of the transformation of Lewiston from a sleepy, quiet village to a vibrant, livable community and cultural destination. Our programs have served as a model to other communities of what is possible when we invest in the arts. The dividends are community where people want to live, work and congregate."
'Blue Mondays'
Recipient of Blues Beat Magazine's prestigious "Muddy" Award, "Blue Mondays" comes back to the Gazebo for a 24th year of blues music. Considered by attendees to be one of the premier Blues venues in WNY, "Blue Mondays" attract a faithful following of blues lovers.
This free, weekly event runs from 7-9 p.m. in front of the Hennepin Park Gazebo, South Fourth and Center streets. Performers include:
  • July 9: Marsha McWilson
  • July 16: Jeremy Keyes Band
  • July 23: Steve Burnside and the Original Marquis
  • July 30: Paleface
  • Aug. 6: Nikki Hicks & Mommas Biscuits
  • Aug. 13: The Foolz
  • Aug. 20: Maria Aurigema
'Summer of '69"
Where were you in the summer of 1969? Tune in, turn on, and reunite at the grooviest summer happening of the year.
Most of Lewiston's 1960s rock musicians have moved on but, for one night only, they will reunite at the Hennepin Park Gazebo for an evening of favorites from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. "Summer of '69" acts set to perform include the Lewiston All Stars, Loved Ones, the County Orphanage, the Invaders and special guest, Grammy Award-winner Gary Baker. For the finale, all players will take the stage for a classic jam.
This free event will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, July 13.
A "Summer of '69" pre-party will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 12 at the Lewiston Stone House, 755 Center St. A $5 admission fee will benefit the Lewiston Council on the Arts.
Chainsaw Art at Tuscarora Nation Picnic & Field Days
Experience the culture and traditions of the Tuscarora people at the 173rd annual Tuscarora Nation Picnic and Field Days. Enjoy food, music, arts, crafts and dances that have been passed down for generations,
With engines screaming and sawdust streaming, a Chainsaw Chix performing artist will create a masterpiece right before guests' eyes.
This event is set for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the corner of Mount Hope and Walmore roads. For more information, visit www.tuscarorapicnic.org.
52nd Lewiston Art Festival
Lewiston's signature artistic event features work by more than 175 exceptional creators and fine crafters. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, along Center Street.
For more than five decades, the Art Festival has attracted visitors to picturesque Lewiston to patronize shops and restaurants while spending extra time at the parks.
At this event, meet the Artists one-on-one and enjoy more than 20,000 original works of art - including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, fiber, glass, wood, mixed media and photography.
This year's featured artist is JoAnn Vanderheidt. The artist and gardener works with all varieties of the natural gourd.
Other highlights include:
•KeyBank Chalk Walk Competition: Watch the chalk fly at the 34th annual KeyBank Chalk Walk Competition. Teams of student artists from Western New York high schools are invited to create spectacular murals and compete for cash awards, trophies and bragging rights. The Chalk Walk takes place from noon until 4 p.m. at Center and Fifth streets. A judging panel will select the top murals, while festivalgoers are invited to cast a ballot for their favorite creation(s).
 •College Alley: A special segment of the Art Festival is carved out for the next generation of artists. College Alley features student artwork, as well as a make-your-own-art station at the make-and-take workshops sponsored by the Lewiston Public Library.

Marble Orchard Ghost Walks
When summer turns to fall, take a walk on "the dark side" to explore the grim and ghastly deeds of Lewiston's best ... and worst. Hear local ghost stories, myths and tales of tragedy, crime, murder and mystery as part of the Marble Orchard Ghost Walks.
Secret and sinister, these events occurred a very long time ago, but the ghosts still haunt Lewiston! Step back in time with this historical and educational tour as the offbeat, theatrical guides take guests through the historic section of the village and into the cemetery. They'll provide patrons with an eerie, yet fun-filled adventure as participants learn about graveyard etiquette, tombstone symbols and the people buried within.
These events are held - rain or shine - at 7 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 22, through Oct. 27. Guests will meet at 476 Center St. They are advised to bring a flashlight, as it gets dark early in the cemetery.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for LCA members and $6 for those under the age of 12.
Chainsaw Art at Lewiston's Harvest & Hops Festival
Another Chainsaw Chix artist will perform at Lewiston's Harvest & Hops Festival, presented by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce. This event will take place in the International Peace Garden, 476 Center St.
The Harvest & Hops Festival is a free event running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23. For more information, visit www.NiagaraRiverRegion.com.
'A Tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald'
Tom Asklar, a local artist and Edmund Fitzgerald enthusiast, will host a tribute to the American Great Lakes freighter that sank during a storm on Lake Superior (resulting in the loss of the entire crew). "A Tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald" is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 (location to be determined).
The evening includes a multimedia presentation of the history, timeline and theories of the Edmund Fitzgerald's destruction, plus music and food.
There is a $5 ticket fee.
