The Grand Island Town Board has appointed Jennifer Menter as the new recreation supervisor at the Town of Grand Island Golden Age Center.
At its meeting Monday in Town Hall, the board voted 5-0 to appoint Menter, who has been a recreation attendant, recreation leader, and most recently acting director/recreation supervisor - senior services. She replaces Barbara Gannon, who retired.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, Lee Cohen of Hennepin Road, a member of the senior center, spoke on the appointment of Menter.
"Just in case you have any doubts, I want you to know that Jenn is absolutely marvelous as director," Cohen said. "She is efficient, she takes care of problems, she listens to us, and there are excellent programs that we have there. I'm very pleased to be a member of the golden agers and look forward to working with Jenn."
Nancy Tobe of Tracey Lane, president of the Golden Age Club, said, "Jenn is a marvelous person. She is there for every single one of us, if we have a problem, if we're happy or we're sad, she's just great. You can't ask for anybody better."
Councilwoman Bev Kinney moved for Menter's appointment. In praising the choice of Menter, Kinney said Menter "has done a fine job for the last six months. She's improved many of the programs that we have and she certainly has improved the spirits in the Golden Age Center. It's running smoothly. I think everybody can attest to that."
Councilman Pete Marston echoed Kinney's thoughts and said in talking with seniors and employees at the center, "They are very happy with Jenn. She's grown into the role rather nicely. She's doing a good job and I'm looking forward to her hopefully handling it when I'm a golden-ager."
Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray said Menter "has done a great job to improve the quality of the services and operations at the Golden Age Center and I have a great respect for her and her efforts to make things better for the seniors in our community, and thank you for all you do."
McMurray said the promotion of Menter does not include a pay raise and is provisional until Civil Service requirements are met.
