On Thursday, Mayor Arthur Pappas announced that the Thursdays on the Water concert series at Gratwick Riverside Park would return for a second year.
Pappas, alongside sponsors of the event, city officials, Dave Jickster of 97 Rock and Jesse Gooch, promoter of the series, said the event is a tremendous asset to have for the City of North Tonawanda.
"One of the things we're very happy about and proud is to have events like this in our city here at Gratwick Riverside Park. ... It's a beautiful venue with the river behind us. It draws a lot of people every summer and it isn't just for North Tonawanda - there's people from all over Western New York - and it's on a great route, because we're right between the City of Niagara Falls and Buffalo and ... any type of event we have here it attracts many and many hundreds of people and we're proud to have things like this," Pappas said.
The free concert series will run from 5-9 p.m. on Thursdays from June 14 to Aug. 16, excluding July 5 and 19. Although the series is free, Twin Cities Meals on Wheels, which provides to those in need in the City of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, will accept donations in the parking lot. There will also be food and beverage vendors' available selling food, pop and alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
Along with the concerts, there will be DJs playing between acts, a kids zone with a climbing wall and games and a photo booth. Gooch said the concert is boat-friendly and chairs and blankets are welcome.
Sponsors for the event include Farmers Insurance, Niagara Gutter, Trinity Detail, Audio One, Painters Plus, Submasters, The Meeting Place, Solidays, The Music Shop, Greater Niagara Federal Credit Union, JG Production, Hunt Real Estate, Canalside Wine and Spirit, Tread City Tire, Niagara Climbing Center and Firepower Industry.
Gooch announced 97 Rock would help the series with its car show and Riviera Theatre assisted with bringing talent to the event.
Jickster said, "We've done a car cruise on Thursdays for the last 12 years and we decided to team up with Jesse and be here in North Tonawanda. A lot of listeners say 'You guys never get to the north towns.' Well, we're going to be in the north towns every Thursday throughout the summer ... we're really looking forward to it."
Pappas replied, "I'm telling you that now that you're coming, you won't wanna leave, because North Tonawanda is paradise. 97 Rock and all these sponsors help keep it paradise."
