$5.6 million in repairs to address higher-traffic county roads; continues Poloncarz administration push for infrastructure improvements
The Erie County Department of Public Works has announced additional roadwork to be conducted in 2018 on higher-traffic roads across the county as part of its "Overlay A" and "Overlay B" projects.
This work will be in addition to the extensive agenda of roadwork the department announced in mid-April, the beginning of more than $31 million in total roadwork that will be invested in county infrastructure in 2018. The first $8 million of that work is already underway and being conducted by Erie County Highways' Division crews. Bids will be out in mid-May for Overlay A work to be performed as part of this next, $5.6 million investment, while Overlay B will be bid out later this year.
"Our Public Works crews are already hard at work on the initial phase of our 2018 road program and today we are pleased to announce additional work that will involve some of the county's most heavily traveled roads," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. "Winter had an extra-long grip on Erie County this year, so we are moving forward quickly to take advantage of the summer months with a robust roadwork schedule. I recently announced my proposal to add $3 million more for roadwork this year, so 2018 will be a busy year for road construction, and motorists and residents should be aware and be patient in work zones."
Commissioner of Public Works Bill Geary added, "Our department stayed busy throughout the long winter months addressing cold-weather concerns, but now our focus shifts to road construction and repair. This additional $5.6 million investment addresses busy roads with high vehicle counts, so we will be getting to work on them as soon as possible."
The 2018 Overlay A road program includes:
•Cleveland Drive (from the thruway to Union Road, .61 miles) and Beach Road (from Wehrle Drive to Genesee Road, 1.70 miles) in Cheektowaga, and
•Ellicott Creek Road (from Town Line to Niagara Falls Boulevard 1.84 miles) and North Forest Road (from Sheridan Drive to Maple Road, 1.01 miles) in Amherst.
These roads are high-volume traffic roads with counts that range from 7,750 to 11,700 vehicles per day. The proposed work will involve milling off 3.5 inches of existing asphalt followed by the placement of 2 inches of asphalt binder and 1.5 inches of asphalt top. New pavement markings and ADA upgrades for pedestrians will also be included in these projects.
Overlay A will be bid out in May with work to start immediately after award of the contract to the successful bidder.
The 2018 Overlay B road program includes:
•Kenmore Avenue (from Vulcan to Military Road, 0.71 miles) in Tonawanda and Pleasant View (from Transit Road to Stony Road) in Lancaster.
These roads are also of a higher traffic volume with between 6,900 and 9,635 vehicles per day. The proposed work will involve milling 3.5 inches of existing asphalt followed by the placement of 2 inches of asphalt binder and 1.5 inches of asphalt top.
Projects in Overlay B will be out for bids after Overlay A, and work on Pleasant View will be conducted after ongoing bridgework on Stony Road is completed in order to minimize traffic detour concerns.
Roadwork announced last month by the Department of Public Works spans all five county highway districts:
•In the Aurora District, Darien Road (from Lewis to Boise) and Holland Glenwood Road (from Phillips Road to Route 240) are scheduled for mill and overlay work in 2018, with an additional $650,000 set aside for pavement preservation and crack sealing operations throughout the district.
•In the Clarence District, Girdle Road (from Bullis to Jamison Road) is scheduled for mill and overlay work with an additional $650,000 on hand for pavement preservation and crack sealing throughout the district.
•Work in the Concord District will include a mill and overlay of Vaughn Road/Route 240 (from Genesee to Route 39) and of Savage Road (from Route 39 to County Line Road) with an additional $650,000 designated for pavement preservation operations and crack sealing throughout the district.
•The Hamburg District is preparing for mill and overlay on Lakeview Road (from Route 20 to Route 62 in the Village of Hamburg) and on Zimmerman Road (from Route 391 to Shero) and also has similar funds set aside for pavement preservation and crack sealing work.
•In the Harlem District, county crews will be conducting mill and overlay work on Dodge Road (from Hopkins to Campbell), Hopkins Road (from Sheridan Drive to Maple Road), and North French Road (from Transit Road to Millersport Highway).
Additionally, the DPW anticipates more than 100 centerline miles of road will be repaired as part of its annual "oil and chip" road repair program, with that work to commence mid-summer. These roads will be identified at a later date.
