Retail store one of last standing at dormant mall
On Monday, Sears announced its location in the Summit Park Mall off Williams Road would close its doors in early August. Sears also announced the store would begin a liquidation sale on May 18.
Sears, a store that's been at the Summit since its beginning in 1972, was one of the last businesses left standing at the dormant Summit Park Mall, along with The Bon Ton, which is also set to close their doors.
In a release from Sears Holdings, spokesman Howard Riefs said, "We are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store in Niagara Falls. ... We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores as previously announced. This is not an effort solely aimed at cost savings but is part of a strategy we have been executing against, as many of our larger stores are too big for our needs. Having fewer stores - and the right format - will help us bring Sears Holdings to a size and place to meet the realities of the changing retail world."
Employees that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other local Sears or Kmart stores.
