Village of Wilson Mayor Arthur Lawson has announced the Wilson community will be among those throughout the country celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week from May 6-12.
"The community is coming together to recognize the many contributions of travel and tourism over the last several decades," he said. "We are highlighting our destination's contributions, successes and potential because of the impact that this industry has on our community."
A highlight of the week's events will be a "Travel Dinner Rally" presented by the Village and Town of Wilson the evening of Tuesday, May 8, at the historic Wilson House Restaurant and Inn, 300 Lake St. The event will bring together the local travel industry during the 35th annual National Travel and Tourism Week to showcase travel's impact on jobs, economy and personal lives.
Rally organizers said one in nine Americans depend on a healthy travel industry for their employment. In 2016, travel generated $72 billion in state and local tax revenue.
Lawson said these economic benefits aren't just isolated to the top tourism hubs like New York City, Orlando or Las Vegas, but they also ripple throughout communities, large or small nationwide.
"(In) just our small community, (we) can boast of our Lake Ontario Shoreline, the Seaway Trail, the Wine Trail, fishing and the historic cobblestone homes," he said.
Keynote speaker at the "Travel Dinner Rally" will be Peter J. Pantuso, president and CEO of the American Bus Association, Washington, D.C. ABA is the largest transportation, travel and tour organization in the U.S., with nearly 4,000 members. It represents 65 percent of the nation's private motor coach fleet.
As CEO, Pantuso oversees ABA's government and regulatory affairs, membership, communications and marketing, meeting and conventions, financial and publishing. He also serves as president of the National Bus Traffic Association and the ABA Foundation.
Lawson said the program will include the Wilson community, key businesses, local travel industry partners, and appearances by area elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Chris Collins, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Niagara County legislators, and supervisors and mayors of area municipalities.
The rally is open to the public. Tickets are priced at $35 each. Reservations are required.
