Event set for Saturday, May 5
While stroke and vascular disease are a leading cause of death and disability in the U.S., many vascular conditions often go undetected because there are no warning signs until a serious medical complication occurs.
To help alert the public to this serious health risk, Mount St. Mary's Hospital will host a free Vascular Health Screening from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the hospital at 5300 Military Road in Lewiston.
This is the third year Mount St. Mary's and Catholic Health have teamed up to sponsor this screening program, which has attracted more than 100 people in each of the past two years.
Appointments are currently being accepted for the screening, which includes tests for carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and peripheral artery disease, along with checks for blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index and pulse oximetry.
Vascular disease, involving an abnormal condition of the blood vessels outside the heart, can affect anyone. Some circulation problems, like varicose and spider veins, are not life-threatening. Others, like deep vein thrombosis and peripheral artery disease, can be. If one has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or a family history of stroke or vascular illness, one may be at increased risk for vascular disease.
Screenings are open to men and women over the age of 50 who smoke or have one or more of the following medical conditions: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart/leg ailments, family history of heart disease or prior stroke.
Participants must meet eligibility requirements and appointments are necessary. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call 716-447-6205.
