Grand Island Town Board: Proclamation issued to citizen responder

The Grand Island Town Board said "Thank you" to a citizen responder who came to the aid of a potential drowning victim.
At its March 19 meeting, the board issued a town proclamation to Grand Island resident Jeff Prusinski, who the board said demonstrated bravery and quick thinking on Sunday, March 11, in the rescue of a young child.
Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray said Prusinski "saved a little boy's life"
According to the Grand Island Fire Co., shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, GIFC rescue personnel responded to the natatorium at Grand Island High School. Fire Chief Chris Soluri stated that when GIFC emergency medical services responders arrived on location within 3 minutes, a lifeguard and Prusinski were administering CPR upon a 10-year-old child who had been under water for an undetermined amount of time.
Noting Prusinski is a former member of the Canadian Army trained in emergency response, a master diver trained in rescue techniques, and an American Red Cross certified first responder in CPR, AED use and first aid the board encouraged everyone to take a CPR course. The proclamation said Prusinski was a bystander at the pool and responded to the child in distress, using his training to assist the on-duty lifeguards.
"Thanks to the timely response of Jeff and the lifeguards, the child had started breathing by the time help arrived," the proclamation said.
In making the proclamation, the board noted first responders credited Prusinski and others "with making a big difference in the outcome by taking action quickly, and afterward encouraged everyone to take a CPR course."
Everybody did the right thing, Prusinski told the board, from the lifeguards, the EMTs and fire company personnel, and the hospital. The most basic thing everyone can do is to get basic first aid and CPR training, he told those attending the Town Board meeting.
