Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Host Community Standing Committee, which administers and oversees projects funded by Niagara River Greenway funding, held a brief meeting to hear several proposals. Two of the proposals came from Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee Wallace, who is also a vice chairperson to the group.
Wallace explained to the committee that works on the Town of Niagara's splash pad in the community park was under budget, while work on the veterans memorial was over budget. Both projects were completed last summer.
What Wallace proposed, was transferring the $39,938.41 in funds from the under-budget splash pad into the veterans memorial, while also requesting an additional $13,325.40 in funds, both, "to cover the costs," from the over-budget memorial.
Wallace said, "There were two main issues with the veterans memorial. One was a drainage issue. Because of the location of the project it caused us to have additional engineering. ... We had to run some piping all the way from a building that's probably three football fields away to take care of some of the drainage. And we had and we still are having an issue with the eternal flame. So, we've tried to change it, it's been reengineered and we're still having problems with it."
Wallace compared the location of the park to the Cave of the Winds, due to the high winds in the park. He said with nothing to really block the wind it was one of the big issues keeping the eternal flame of the memorial lit. Wallace added the two issues were a big reason why the project went over budget.
The transfer and request were approved by the committee shortly after Wallace's brief presentation.
Wallace later recommended the committee visit the town's new veterans memorial and said everything with the park "is going really well."
The Town of Niagara uses Veterans Memorial Community Park for various events throughout the year, such as Music Mania Monday's, Veterans Day ceremonies, holiday parties, fundraisers, baseball/softball leagues, the brand-new Noel at Niagara park lighting around Christmas and much more.
