Grand Island Town Board sets public hearing for truck stop law

Sat, Mar 10th 2018 07:00 am
The Grand Island Town Board Monday set a public hearing for 8 p.m. March 19 to receive input on proposed local law intro No. 1 of 2018 banning travel plazas on Grand Island.
The proposal is in response to a project under consideration by Love's Travel Stop and Country Stores of Oklahoma for a truck stop on Whitehaven Road near Alvin Road.
Residents praised the board for its response to the Love's proposal during public comment periods of the meeting. Dave Reilly of 2489 Whitehaven Road said the town cannot allow the truck stop and he commended the board for standing up quickly and decisively to send a strong message of opposition.
•After suspending the rules of order and holding an impromptu public hearing, the board approved an application for a public improvement permit and a resolution accepting an easement and sewer infrastructure maintenance agreement for Grand Island Hotel LLC (the Holiday Inn Express).
After Councilman Mike Madigan insisted that residents should have an opportunity to comment to the board on the matter because it was not on the regular agenda. After public input, the board gave the green light to allow the hotel under construction to hook into the sanitary sewer system at the adjacent Grand Island Commerce Center on Long Road.
•The board authorized the supervisor to sign an agreement with the Grand Island Central School District for a school resource officer, subject to changes suggested by Grand Island Police Officer in Charge Chris Soluri.
The agreement will be referred to the Grand Island Board of Education, which meets Monday, for final approval of a contract. The district has a $45,000 grant in hand from the office of State Sen. Chris Jacobs to fund the SRO.
