Grand Island Fire Co.: Driver seriously injured in accident involving Metro bus

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Metro bus and two passenger vehicles on Grand Island Boulevard near Fantasy Island.
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Mathes and Capt. John Podlucky shared officer-in-charge duties and reported that 13 individuals were evaluated at the scene. Five were transported by Twin City Ambulance to local hospitals for injuries not considered life-threatening, while seven others declined hospitalization. Joseph Rossi, 27, of Grand Island was pulled from his burning vehicle by an alert passerby, and was treated by GIFC medics for serious traumatic injuries. He was then transported by Twin City Ambulance to Erie County Medical Center for emergency follow-up.
An ECMC "SMART" team was dispatched to the scene, and City of Tonawanda Fire Department mutual aid assistance was also received.
The NFTA Police assumed command of the scene, and all other units returned to service at 10:30 a.m.
