WNY police, firefighters and first responders host blood and registry drives
More than 45 local firefighters and police officers are joining in Unyts' "Holiday Heroes" campaign, helping to save lives during the most critical time of year for blood donations.
The Town of Lewiston and Niagara County Legislator Rebecca Wydysh will host a blood drive from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Lewiston Senior Center, 4361 River Road.
Unyts is the primary supplier of blood and platelet products for Kaleida Health, ECMC and hospitals in Niagara and Wyoming counties. All blood donated through Unyts remains in Western New York for local patients in need. In December alone, Unyts' hospitals will require more than 3,000 units of blood for patient care. As such, support from the community is vital in helping to meet this demand.
The "Holiday Heroes" campaign is an opportunity to highlight the importance of donation, and a way to give back. Blood donation appointments for the Town of Lewiston drive can be made at www.unyts.org/holidayheroes or by calling 716-512-7940. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
The event will include opportunities to learn about organ, eye and tissue donation and join the New York State Donate Life Registry.
