Grand Island man sentenced for attack

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced Wednesday that 23-year-old Sammy Abdellatif of Grand Island has been sentenced by Erie County Court Judge Kenneth F. Case to eight years in prison and four years post-release supervision for an attack on an Erie County sheriff's deputy.
In August of 2017, the defendant pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second degree.
On Aug. 24, 2016, Abdellatif intentionally attempted to cause the death of Erie County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Clark by choking him during a traffic stop.
According to the sheriff's office, Clark was investigating an unrelated suspicious vehicle report on East River Road when Abdellatif drove by in a vehicle and shouted threats. Abdellatif was out on bail from an earlier arrest in which he was charged with aggravated harassment in the second degree after he called Erie County Sheriff's Office's dispatchers and threatened to "murder his ass straight up" the next time he saw a specific deputy. Clark was attacked during a subsequent traffic stop, but escaped with the aid of a passerby.
Flynn commended Erie County Sheriff's Senior Detectives John Graham and Gregory McCarthy for their investigative work. Deputy District Attorney for Litigation Joseph A. Agro and Assistant District Attorney Nathanael C. Kapperman prosecuted the case.
