WNY police, firefighters & first responders host blood and registry drives
More than 45 local firefighters and police officers are joining in Unyts' "Holiday Heroes" campaign, helping to save lives during the most critical time of year for blood donations. A number of fire companies across Niagara County are supporting the campaign with blood drives in January.
  • Miller Hose - 6161 McKee St., Newfane, on Wednesday, Jan. 3 (3-7 p.m.)
  • Wilson Fire Co. - 250 Young St., on Saturday, Jan. 6 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Cambria Volunteer Fire Co. - 4631 Cambria Wilson Road, Lockport on Sunday, Jan. 7 (10 a.m.-2 p.m.)
  • Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2 - 1705 Saunders Settlement Road, Niagara Falls, on Monday, Jan. 8 (3-7 p.m.)
  • Pekin Fire Co. - 3024 Upper Mountain Road, Sanborn, on Saturday, Jan. 20 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.)
Unyts is the primary supplier of blood and platelet products for Kaleida Health, ECMC and hospitals in Niagara and Wyoming counties. All blood donated through Unyts remains in Western New York for local patients in need.
In January alone, Unyts' hospitals will require more than 3,000 units of blood for patient care. As such, support from the community is vital in helping to meet this demand. Blood drive organizers said the "Holiday Heroes" campaign is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of donation, and a great way to give back during this season of giving.
Blood donation appointments for any Niagara County "Holiday Heroes" blood drive can be made at www.unyts.org/holidayheroes or by calling 716-512-7940. Walk-in donors are also welcome.
The event will include opportunities to learn about organ, eye and tissue donation and join the New York State Donate Life Registry.
