Revisit "Christmas in the 1950s" for a glimpse of some holiday magic as the Niagara County History Center presents its next "Family Night," from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 215 Niagara St., Lockport.
Many Christmas traditions were started in the 1950s, post-World War II, as America celebrated Christmas with renewed prosperity and hope for the future. Becky Pittler, History Center volunteer and co-curator of the Bond-Hawley House, will share them with guests. Attendees also will find out how aluminum trees and plastic decorations began to be included in Christmas celebrations in the 1950s, along with some new toys being introduced that have lasted for decades.
The all-ages program will include conversation and games as guests travel back in time to Christmases 60 years ago. Attendees can make 1950s-style Christmas decorations to adorn a tree and home.
Admission to "Family Night" is free. A pizza and beverage supper will be available for a nominal donation from 5:30-6 p.m., followed by the program.
The event is open to everyone, regardless of residence. Reservations are necessary. Call the History Center at 716-434-7433 to reserve a spot or for additional information.
The History Center receives grant assistance from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
