Sat, Dec 9th 2017 07:00 am
The giving season is underway in Youngstown.
Coming off today's Youngstown Christmas in the Village celebration, word comes the Village of Youngstown/Town of Porter is taking things a step further.
Spokesperson Beverly Roach reports the annual Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets campaign team is now preparing its annual holiday food and gift baskets for distribution to needy families in the Village of Youngstown and Town of Porter.
And they can use your help.
"This is a great opportunity for the community to join together to honor the spirit of the holiday," she said.
Roach reports that, tomorrow morning, Sunday, Dec. 10, Boy Scout Troop 829 will conduct its annual holiday basket food drive. Residents are urged to contribute food - both canned goods and nonperishable food items. These items can be left in a bag on one's front porch or near one's roadside mailbox where the Scouts will do pickups.
Those who miss out on the Scouts' holiday basket drive can still bring their donated items to the Red Brick Village Center gym, where the collections will continue. Roach said donations of food may also be dropped off at the Youngstown Free Library in the Red Brick from Monday, Dec. 11, through Thursday, Dec. 14.
Also sought are gifts for children ages 1-18. Roach advised interested residents to call the Village of Youngstown office at 716-745-7721 for more information.
Throughout this coming week, volunteers consisting of Village of Youngstown officials, the Youngstown Lions Club, staff from the Lewiston-Porter Central School District and interested community residents will be sorting and wrapping the received gifts, along with the food staples for distribution from donors. Gifts will be sorted and wrapped throughout week, while canned and nonperishable goods will be sorted Thursday afternoon. Both the foods and gifts will be delivered to needy families in the community on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 16.
For more information on donating or assisting with this effort, contact the Village of Youngstown offices at 716-745-7721.
The Youngstown Lions Club, at its December meeting, donated toys for the Youngstown/Porter Community Holiday Baskets campaign. The Lions also purchased meats for the baskets and will be assisting in the pickup of donated food and basket delivery on Saturday, Dec. 16.
