The Buffalo Jazztet will perform a special evening of holiday-themed music at the Taylor Theater on Saturday, Dec. 2.
"Tidings of Comfort & Jazz" is the fourth concert in the Kenan Center's 50th Anniversary Jazz Series, featuring jazz players and recording artists who are well respected on a national level. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Taylor Theater, a 153-seat converted carriage house on the center's campus, providing an intimate, club-like atmosphere. The concert will feature two full sets of music. Refreshments will be available.
The Buffalo Jazztet, led by trumpeter Mark Filsinger, features Bobby Militello on alto saxophone, John Hasselback on trombone, pianist George Caldwell, bassist Jim Colemon, and John Bacon on drums. This marks the third concert appearance at the Taylor Theater for Filsinger, Militello and Bacon, who performed to packed houses over the course of the 50th Anniversary Jazz Series.
"Tidings of Comfort & Jazz" will feature seasonal standards, classic Christmas carols and other holiday favorites. From the popular "Charlie Brown" compositions by Vince Guaraldi to Irving Berlin's classic, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas" to Bob Wells and Mel Torme's romantic "A Christmas Song," all of the music will showcase jazz arrangements created by the Jazztet.
The 50th Anniversary Jazz Series was conceived and co-produced by Kathleen Rooney, co-founder of The Carriage House Players, a group presenting plays as well as musical performances at the Taylor Theater in collaboration with the Kenan Center.
"Audiences have really responded to these wonderful evenings of music in our intimate Taylor Theater," Kenan Center Executive Director Susan Przybyl said. "I'm happy to announce we will continue presenting jazz at the Taylor Theater in 2018."
Bringing a series of live performances to the Taylor Theater has been the mission of Kathleen Rooney, who produced the jazz series and is a co-founder of The Carriage House Players.
"Growing up in Lockport, the Kenan Center was a magical place where I was exposed to theater, art and music of all kinds," she said. "It's been a pleasure to see the Taylor Theater filled with first-timers as well as audiences who've supported the arts since the center's inception."
Tickets for each show are $15 for Kenan Center members and $20 for the general public, and may be purchased online at Ticketleap, in person at the Kenan Center business office, or charged by phone. Ample free parking is available onsite. The Taylor Theater is located on the campus of the Kenan Center at 433 Locust St., Lockport. For further information, visit www.kenancenter.org or call 716-433-2617.
Because seating is limited, advance tickets are recommended.
