The Grand Island Central School District will honor veterans from the Grand Island community next week with a new event.
An indoor parade through the halls of Veronica Connor Middle School and Grand Island High School will honor U.S. veterans. Veterans from the Grand Island American Legion Post No. 1346 and Charles N. DeGlopper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9249 have been invited to walk in the parade, and so approximately 20 have responded, according to the district. Students from both buildings will line the halls holding mini-U.S. flags, cheering, clapping and thanking veterans.
"We are very proud of our U.S. veterans and the service they gave to our country. We wanted to honor them in a very personal way by inviting them to our buildings," said Dr. Brian Graham, superintendent of the Grand Island Central School District.
The parade route will begin in front of the Veronica E. Connor Middle School Little Theater, go through middle school classroom hallways, continue to the high school classroom hallways and conclude in the high school cafeteria with a continental breakfast prepared by district food service staff. The event will include patriotic songs performed by the high school chorus ensemble.
Parade Schedule
•8:30 a.m.: U.S. veterans, the DeGlopper VFW Post color guard, bagpiper and drummer assemble in the Middle School Little Theater.
•9-9:05 a.m.: Parade begins at the Middle School Little Theater and makes a route through the middle school and high school.
•9:30-10:30 a.m.: Parade ends at the high school cafeteria for a breakfast, brief remarks and music.
