Stevenson wins Green Party line

Twenty-four-year-old first-time candidate Random M. Stevenson has won the Green Party Line for Niagara County legislator District 7. The district covers parts of Wheatfield and North Tonawanda, and he is the first Green Party member to win this line.
Stevenson is a graduate of Niagara-Wheatfield High School and attended Niagara County Community College. He works at Applebee's restaurant as a waiter, so he said he struggles to make ends meet.
While a newcomer to running for office, Stevenson has been active in politics most of his life, volunteering for campaigns from town councilmen to congressmen over the years. Stevenson is also active in charity work and in giving back to the community.
He said he decided to run for office to offer a new face and fresh ideas, not the same old, same old. Some of his issues are lowering taxes. He asks why Niagara County has some of the highest per capita tax rates while people have little or nothing for it; where are museums, art galleries, orchestras and other quality of life events; where does the money go; and why does the legislature not step in to assist those people.
Stevenson said that, if the towns won't do anything, the county should step in.
"Why have we not directly negotiated with the Senecas regarding the casino cash shut off? While this may be more of a Niagara Falls issue, the county receives a substantial sum of the payouts. They have expressed a desire to negotiate directly with local officials. It's time to take control of our own destiny, not count on Albany to feed us a few crumbs. These are just a few of the questions that need to be asked," he said.
Over the next month, Stevenson will walk the district, knocking on doors and asking people what their concerns are.
