Stemming from the success of recent restoration and preservation projects, and the receipt of several large-scale donations of original Roycroft artifacts, the Roycroft Campus has announced the establishment of The Museum, located in the historic Print Shop.
The Museum is the new permanent home of the campus' historic collection of documents, books, furniture and artwork. It showcases the Roycroft's history and Elbert Hubbard's legacy. This expansion of the guest experience provides visitors the opportunity to see rare, one-of-a-kind letters and artifacts, and learn more about the people, products and philosophy that made Hubbard and the Roycroft an important part of the arts and crafts movement.
Among the notable artifacts is personal correspondence from Hubbard to family members and friends, including the last piece of correspondence he wrote - a postcard to his mother on the day he departed for his voyage aboard the Lusitania. He and hundreds of others perished when the ship was struck by a torpedo fired from a German submarine in May 1915 during the First World War.
"This is an exciting time for the campus as we can now offer our visitors a greater insight into who Elbert Hubbard was, especially in his personal relationships, and showcase the origins and growth of the Roycroft Shops," Executive Director Curt Maranto said. "Our collection will also be available for research purposes to individuals who want a more in-depth look into the campus' history. It will compliment the Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum, run by the Aurora Historical Society, and give visitors to East Aurora more opportunities to view and study original Roycroft artifacts."
Hundreds gathered for a special opening celebration last week that was made possible by Moog, M&T Bank, Bee Group Newspapers, Vidler's 5 & 10 and The James F. Collins Agency. The Museum is now open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, and by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays. General admission is $5, or one can become a member of the Roycroft Campus and receive free access to The Museum throughout the year.
