On Monday evening, as Supervisor Robert Cliffe opened the floor to the public to begin Wheatfield's Town Board meeting, a citizen showed her appreciation for the board's work.
She thanked the board members for the duties they did for the Haul Road parcel of land and at the meeting the board fully approved a motion to issue a certified check for the remaining price of $38,853.97 on the parcel.
The road is an emergency exit for citizens who live in Wilrose Court when flooding occurs. In the past, citizens grew concerned at their inability to drive through water when there were heavy rainfalls.
At the Aug. 21 meeting, the board agreed to purchase the parcel of land. Monday's motion was a step to finishing the purchase so the land can become the town's property.
"We'll be chasing the certified check in the morning, it'll go to (Attorney's Office) Matt (Brooks) and then Matt will go to the attorney's office and make the payment there, sign the documents and we'll take ownership of the property at that point, then we have to file it with the county," Cliffe said.
In other news, the Town Board members approved the hiring of four employees to programs within the town's Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Melissa Durfey was approved for hire as the Zumba instructor.
  • Karin Rafter was approved for hire as the ladies' exercise instructor.
  • Chris Crangle was approved for hire as one of the basketball instructors.
  • Jeff Haseley was approved for hire as one of the basketball instructors.
Town Board members agreed to correct a water bill that overcharged an account on Cayuga Street. The board noted a computer error was to blame for the $772.75 overcharge.
"We have the Badger program that does the radio reads," Councilman Larry Helwig said. "He thinks (Rich Donner, Water/Sewer Department) the meter that was reading the radios somehow transmitted an invalid water meter reading and it calculated a huge bill for this person. They've since replaced with a new meter, so it should be calculating properly in the future."
The Town Board approved the Town of Wheatfield Highway Department to purchase a truck liftgate at a cost of $5,620 to replace the current liftgate that needed replacement.
"We have one now and it's getting old," Cliffe said. "It's just a simple $6,000 replacement for a liftgate."
The Town Board also approved an additional motion near the conclusion of the meeting that requested additional construction for a sewer lift station on Jagow Road.
"The lift station on Jagow Road had a few problems with it and GHD, who was the construction manager on the project, we hired them to make sure that it's done properly. They had designed the project, designed the bit specs and also hired them to follow the project up.
"The following was based on a certain number of hours and it took longer, so they're asking for additional funds. It was a not-to-exceed bid, which is certainly legit, but it took more hours than the original estimate," Cliffe said.
The next Wheatfield Town Board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18.
