The Niagara County Department of Health "Healthy Neighborhoods" program, a free indoor environmental health and safety program, is now available in Lockport.
The state-grant-funded program has been in existence in Niagara County since the mid-1990s, but, until recently, focused most of its attention on the City of Niagara Falls. In 2015, the program moved its services to serve other municipalities, to include target areas of North Tonawanda, Middleport, Barker, Newfane, Olcott, Burt and Wilson. Now, the program has moved to target areas in Lockport.
"The 'Healthy Neighborhoods' program is enhancing quality of life in Lockport by helping residents to improve environmental health and safety conditions in the home," Public Health Director Daniel Stapleton said.
"Healthy Neighborhoods" public health technicians visit homes to identify environmental health and safety problems, and offer residents education and oftentimes free products such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, items to prevent lead poisoning, falls and asthma attacks. The program does not issue fines, tickets or summonses.
The public health technicians are qualified professionals offering evidence-based program services to improve the health, safety and quality of life for the residents in the target areas. Many of the neighborhoods in Lockport will have the technicians visiting and knocking on doors to ask if the residents would like to take advantage of this free health and safety program. For a family to receive the free materials, members must agree to allow the technicians in the home to ensure detectors are installed correctly.
