Behavior is a powerful form of communication - and one of the primary ways for people with Alzheimer's disease to communicate their needs and feelings, as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage.
The Alzheimer's Association Western New York Chapter has a number of free educational materials and programs aimed at helping caregivers "decode" and manage behavioral changes as the disease progresses. One of those classes, "Understanding and Responding to Dementia Related Behaviors" will be presented at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the Niagara Falls LaSalle Branch Library at 8728 Buffalo Ave.
Chapter dementia experts will offer guidance and "best practices" advice on learning how to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common challenges associated with dementia.
