The Kenan Center is planning a 1960s-style wrap-up to the summer to mark its 50th anniversary, and organizers said it's shaping up to be the "party of parties." The event, "Kenan's Summer Shindig - Celebrating 50 Years," will take place from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Kenan house and gardens, 433 Locust St., Lockport. The casual event will feature food from 80 Main and Lock 34, wine and beer, live music by Off the Cuff, plus a photo booth and silent auction.
Chairs of the event, Maggie Hagenbach, Rosemary Stritzel and Chris Marra, along with their committee members, decided to make this year's annual gala a more relaxed and casual affair that would appeal to patrons.
The '60s theme is connected to 1967, the year in which the Kenan Center was officially founded, and is being woven into the décor with vivid period colors and accouterments. Guests are encouraged to get in the spirit by donning their favorite bell bottoms, peasant dresses and tie-dye shirts, whether vintage from their own closets, or "new vintage" designs.
"In this year filled with nostalgia, the 'Summer Shindig' is a way for the community to reminisce about the early days of the Kenan Center- whether those memories are of their parents who volunteered, coached and served as leaders of the institution, or of those who grew up playing, learning and engaging in the arts at this one-of-a-kind community center," Board President Selena Truax Morello said.
Morello, who has also served for the past year as co-chair of the Kenan Center's 50th anniversary celebration, said the "Summer Shindig" is "certain to be a celebratory event with great food, music, and support from Kenan Center patrons."
Kenan Center Executive Director Susan Przybyl concurred and said the "Summer Shindig" is both a trip down memory lane and a celebration of the center's success.
"We're taking a look back to the 1960s, when Kenan Center was established, and reveling in 2017 and our community accomplishments together," she said. "We are looking back with pride and ahead with promise!"
Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased in person at the Kenan Center business office, 433 Locust St., or by calling 716-433-2617.
Proceeds will go to the Linda Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund benefitting children in need.
