Community meetings to discuss Tonawanda Coke Soil Study

Sat, Jun 10th 2017 07:00 am
Citizen Science Community Resources, in collaboration with the University at Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia, is holding a series of public meetings to discuss the Tonawanda Coke Soil Study in the City of Tonawanda, Town of Tonawanda and Grand Island. CSCR will hold multiple casual community meetings in June and July to spread awareness and answer questions about the study
Residents in many local neighborhoods, including the eastern side of Grand Island across the river from Tonawanda Coke, are encouraged to sign up and have their soil tested. U.S. District Court found Tonawanda Coke guilty of breaking 14 environmental laws. The company was fined, with $711,000 of the fine used to fund the study.
"Tonawanda Coke's criminal conviction would never have happened if it wasn't for our residents," explained CSCR Director Jackie James-Creedon. "Our success so far is due to strong support from the local community. Residents can get involved with this current study by attending meetings to ask questions, signing up to have their yards tested, and/or volunteering to collect soil samples."
Any questions may be directed to the CSCR office at 873-6191.
