According to the National Cyber Security Alliance, 60 percent of small businesses that experience a data breach or a cyber-attack are unable to maintain business. In addition, the average cost to fix an attack or a breach is close to $700,000.

To help educate Western New Yorker's on how to protect their business from an attack or a breach, Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York, AT&T, American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) Western New York have partnered with the U.S. attorney's office, Crimestoppers, Erie County Law Enforcement Foundation, Lawley and Lincoln Archives to host a free cybersecurity seminar, featuring experts on topics including:

Cyber security and your business

Securing your mobile device and data

Cyber security insurance

Device and paper file disposal

The cybersecurity seminar is being held from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, with registration beginning at 8 a.m., at Hilbert College, Bogel Hall, Room 101 in Hamburg.

Designed as an educational and networking event, this comprehensive seminar provides professionals the opportunity to learn about best practices in protecting companies from crippling disruption caused not only by cyberattacks, but also from unexpected disruptions caused by natural disasters and prolonged power outages. Additionally, participants will learn about today's powerful tools to protect sensitive data while working within compliance boundaries.

Event organizers said cybersecurity is critical to the operations of any sized business, and executives need to pay as much attention to security as they do to the bottom line.

Research from AT&T shows the importance of being educated and prepared:

•There are more than 117,000 cyberattacks on businesses each day.

•Seventy-five percent of businesses admit to not making decisions to tackle cyber security threats.

•Seventy-eight percent of all employees do not follow the security policies set forth by their employer.

•The estimated average financial loss per cybersecurity incident in 2014 was $2.7 million, up 34 percent from a year earlier. In addition, security experts have seen a dramatic 45 percent increase in the number of times hackers searched vulnerabilities, and more than half of organizations are not re-evaluating their information security in response to high-visibility data breaches.

•The black market for sensitive business data and information has grown into a large, predatory economy and with organized criminal activity being responsible for 80 percent of global cybercrime.

•The seminar is free, but participants must register for the event at http://www.asiswny.org/store/p51/Cyber_Security_in_the_Workplace.html or call 716-558-7945.
