Higgins announces availability of federal fire grants

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Department of Homeland Security is now accepting applications for grants through the Fire Prevention and Safety program. 

"Federal fire grants play a major role in helping to keep our local firefighters and the neighborhoods they serve prepared and protected," Higgins said. "I encourage local agencies to take this opportunity to apply and bring these federal resources home." 

Fire Prevention Safety Grants are intended to help local organizations address fire prevention and safety issues with the primary goal of reaching high-risk target groups including children, seniors and firefighters.

Up to $34.5 million will be made available for FP&S grants nationwide this year. FP&S is part of a larger Assistance to Firefighters program administered by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

Eligible applicants for FP&S grants include fire departments; national, regional, state, local, Native American tribal organizations; and nonprofit organizations that are recognized for their experience and expertise in fire prevention and safety programs.

FP&S grants support activities in two categories: activities designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate incidences of death and injuries caused by fire and fire-related hazards; and research and development activities aimed at improving firefighter safety.

All applications are submitted to DHS and go through a nonpartisan, merit-based review ranked by factors established by a panel of service professionals.
