City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas recently announced the Arbor Day Foundation has again named the City of North Tonawanda "2017 Tree City USA" in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters.

To commemorate this honor, Pappas gathered with Department of Public Works Superintendent Brad Rowles, Parks and Recreation Director Patty Brosius, park maintenance crew leader Craig Anthony and Alderman-at-Large Robert Pecoraro on Arbor Day, Friday, April 28, in Heritage Park. The Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks planted a new tree, and Pappas read a proclamation. Patrick Marren, senior forester with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, attended the celebration to present the city with its Tree City USA flag and designation certificate.

"North Tonawanda is proud to be a community that makes the planting and care of trees a priority," Pappas said. "Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits. The City makes an effort to quickly replace any trees that must be removed for whatever reason."
