Canisius College is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from the America's Warrior Partnership Community Integration. The nonprofit organization, funded by the Wounded Warriors Project, identifies and supports community-level agencies and institutions that provide holistic services to veterans. Canisius will use the grant to advance the curriculum, program development and services to veteran students who study at the college.

"The mission of Canisius College and America's Warrior Partnership aligns perfectly," said Anne Marie Dobies Class of 1992, MS '99, MSEd '06, assistant vice president and director of the Griff Center for Academic Engagement, which oversees veteran services. "We understand that building a community and offering a safe space, in which veteran students can thrive and feel as though they share a common bond with fellow veterans, can be crucial to their success."

Canisius will use the grant to acquire textbooks for veteran students who are not financially able, due to monetary restrictions. The grant will also support the creation of a vet-to-vet program, which will provide amenities to veteran students, on a case-by-case basis, depending on their specific needs. Amenities may include a bus pass or monetary assistance for a meal plan, among other things.

Lastly, Canisius will use monies from the grant to expand the college's Veteran Community Series. Held twice per month, the series helps build a community of support among the veteran population at Canisius, and connects these same students with the greater Buffalo veteran community.

"This grant from America's Warrior Partnership will help make our veterans more successful," said Sierra Bonerb, assistant director of veteran services at Canisius. "As always, our goal is to support military veterans and their families. We are excited about what this means for Canisius and its veteran students."

G.I. Jobs magazine recently designated Canisius a Military Friendly School for the eighth consecutive year. The college has 123 veterans who receive benefits; 85 are post-9/11 recipients.

Canisius instituted an office of veterans services in March 2011 to meet the needs of a growing veteran student population that has more than doubled since 2007. The office is now part of the Griff Center for Academic Engagement, which provides academic, disability, career and social support for all students, including the veteran population.

Canisius is one of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation.
