Grand Island Fire Chief Matt Osinski has announced that a special award presentation will take place during the scheduled Fire Prevention Open House on Friday, Oct. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Grand Island Fire Co. headquarters, 2275 Baseline Road.

Four individuals - Erie County Deputy Sheriff Richard Lundberg, Danielle Walsh, Donald Vacanti and Susan Fittante - will receive fire prevention commendations for their quick-thinking actions on April 15 when they rendered assistance to a motorcycle accident victim. They summoned Grand Island Fire Co. emergency responders and provided initial life support until paramedics arrived on location to commence advanced life support treatment.

Meanwhile, Assistant Fire Chief Omar Sortino, program coordinator, has arranged for multi-agency participation, which will include firefighting and EMS displays and demonstrations by the GIFC, Western New York fire service, and local law enforcement.

Firefighter and EMS teams will visit Grand Island elementary schools Oct. 11, 12 and 13 to offer fire safety tips. Sidway Elementary School students will visit fire headquarters Oct. 14 to gain first-hand knowledge of fire company operations and engage in challenging hands-on safety exercises. Students will also receive the chance to enter the highly anticipated "Ride to School in a Fire Truck" drawing, to be held during open house activities.

During the open house, a thought-provoking live fire demonstration will show firefighters in action during a dangerous hazmat situation. The GIFC Ladies Auxiliary will again provide refreshments, including a hot dog roast at a nominal cost, while conducting their well-received basket raffle.

Osinski said he hopes that as many people as possible will set aside some quality time to meet with their GIFC volunteers and friends.
