NT 'Healing Field' honors those who have served, victims and first responders of 9/11

Mon, Sep 12th 2016 01:25 pm

To mark the 15th anniversary of the tragedy that shook the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, hundreds of people paid their respects to victims and first responders, as well other servicemen and women, during North Tonawanda's first "Healing Field" event at Gratwick Riverside Park.

Over the weekend, the poles of the 3,000 flags that made up the healing field each displayed the name of an individual who died during the attacks, or the name of a veteran, serviceman, family member or friend of those who donated and purchased the flags.

Serving as the event's keynote speaker was retired Lt. Col. Mark Onesi. Local officials also spoke to reflect and remember the 9/11 tragedy, as well as honor the fallen.

A volunteer committee of local community members organized the event. Additional volunteers included members of local Boy Scout troops, the Civil Air Patrol and teachers and students of local elementary and high schools.
