Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the sheriff's office's enhanced DWI patrols and checkpoint arrested six operators over the Fourth of July weekend, including one on Grand Island.

On Independence Day at 4:51 p.m., a sheriff's deputy responded to complaints about a vehicle on Love Road operating in an unsafe manner. When Deputy Cully Ferrick located the vehicle, he observed the vehicle traveling 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, swerving from side to side and operating in the wrong lane of travel twice. After a traffic stop, Ferrick administered standard field sobriety tests and attempted to perform an Alco-Sensor test, but the driver refused.

The operator, Christopher Shores, 25, of Grand Island, was charged with driving while intoxicated - combination of alcohol and drugs; speeding, failing to use designated lane, and an unsafe lane change. Shores was later released on appearance tickets.
