Rotary Club leads annual parkway cleanup

Sat, May 7th 2016 07:00 am

The Grand Island Rotary Club led its annual spring cleanup of the Beaver Island Parkway Saturday.

A group of 14 volunteers - five Rotarians, two elders from the Church of Latter Day Saints, and seven Grand Island High School seniors from Bob Simpson's government class - met at about 8 a.m. and worked until around 11 a.m.

The team included GI Rotarians Mike Lockett, Rotary President-elect Dan Flaimt, Maria DelSignore, Henry Kammerer and Dick Earne; and high school seniors Chris Bookhagen, Jermiah Cooper, Alex Whetham, Loveleen Manget, Jake Schmidt and Jake Kawecki.

Trash collected included fast-food wrappers, drink boxes and cups, cigarette butts, and plastic shopping bags. One of the worst things was roofing scraps from an old roof that could have blown off a truck hauling it away along the parkway, volunteers report.

The Rotarians ask all Islanders to play a part in keeping the parkway clean, so its beauty can be shared by all. Besides just not throwing trash out the window, to help in subsequent cleanups, email Dick Earne at [email protected].
