Modern Corporation has been chosen as the 2016 Chairman's Award recipient by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce board of directors and Chairwoman Kristen Trunzo.

In more than 50 years of business, Modern Corporation has contributed back to this community, supporting many charitable organizations and providing a much-needed service while adhering to the highest standards.

Modern Corporation was started in 1964 and grew out of Steve Washuta's paving business. He operated his business with great customer service and a solid reputation, expanding into trash service with a two-truck operation. A strong work ethic helped grow the business into the corporation it is today, with innovative business segments - over 300 trucks throughout Western New York and employing more than 500 people from Niagara and Erie counties, and Canada. Customers include residential, commercial and schools, to name a few.

The Modern Corporation is a group of companies that specializes in waste management recycling with innovative and sustainable environmental practices.

The environment is a key aspect that affects the way Modern is run. Commitment has always been to adhere to the highest standards in how it does business, complying with federal, state and county regulations.

One of Modern's main company principles is sustainability. Making decisions with a long-term perspective is key to its success, with a goal of "recognizing the value of 'waste' as a resource and maintaining the commitment to the environment." Examples of sustainability throughout the corporation are woven in what Modern does, from recycling, transportation and energy, to local food production (H2Gro Greenhouses), community support and education. The best form of marketing the company offers is its educational programs, which are given throughout the year, both on site and off.

Technology plays a big part in the operations of Modern. GPS systems are integrated in all of the trucks and landfills. Computers are also in the trucks and are used in the operations of the recycling facility. With an ever-changing industry, Modern has integrated the latest technology in all aspects of the corporation.

While the Modern Corporation is bound contractually through its host community agreement to give back to the Town of Lewiston over time, the company goes above and beyond any written obligations. In fact, a key principle of the company is giving back.

Many community organizations have benefited from Modern's in-kind and financial support. Some of the beneficiaries include: The Lewiston Kiwanis Club, the Lewiston Art Festival, the Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival, Lewiston Harvest Festival, Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center, The Boys & Girls Club, Niagara Hospice, local fire companies and many golf tournaments for organizations.

Modern Corporation is grateful for the community, as the residents and businesses have helped it become successful. The community supports Modern and the company, in turn, supports the community. The men and women who work at Modern Corporation live and work in the communities that are served and are dedicated to preserving the long-term environmental and economic health of the region.

The chairman and the board of directors of the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce proudly congratulate Modern Corporation for its commitment in growing its business here in the Niagara River Region, and for willingly sharing its success with the community.
