The donation provides shelter, care and food to local abandoned and abused animals

Tops Friendly Markets, in partnership with Nestle Purina PetCare Company, presented a $10,000 donation to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Serving Erie County on Wednesday. The donation was the result of a joint business effort between Tops and Purina, both long-time supporters of the SPCA.

"Pets are part of the family. At Tops, we want our customers to know that we understand the emotional connection they have with their pets," said Andrew Brocato, Tops director of public and community relations. "The SPCA is a big part of our community and we support what they are doing each day to place pets in good homes and to make sure they are cared for in a loving family."

The $10,000 donation will provide food, shelter and care services to the 12,000 animals annually cared for by the SPCA. A full wildlife rehabilitation center within the SPCA also benefits from the donation. The comprehensive service offers an environment where wounded animals receive care and assimilation back into their natural habitat.

"Both Tops and Purina have truly come through for the SPCA and its animals and, last year, these organizations really exceeded all hopes," said Gina Browning, SPCA director of public relations. "With such a generous donation, the SPCA is able to enhance its community programs in addition to providing care, compassion and healing to so many more animals in need."

The SPCA Serving Erie County was formed in 1867 and is the second-oldest humane society in the country. Its knowledgeable, caring and open-minded team of staff and volunteers achieves that mission through proactive efforts to address the current status of animals in this community, education of adults and children, rescue and sheltering of animals in need, and placement of animals into appropriate homes. The SPCA does not receive any funding from the county, city, state or federal governments. Rather, it is a humane society only able to assist the people and pets in need through generous donations.
