Patricia Q. Covley was named director of the Grand Island Memorial Library by the Grand Island Memorial Library Board of Trustees. The announcement was made by Pat Rizzuto, president of the board. Current Director Lynn Konovitz will retire from the library system Dec. 26. He first joined the library system in 1977 and has been director of the Grand Island Memorial Library since 1984.

According to Rizzuto, the board of trustees interviewed four candidates for the position. "We interviewed all people who passed the civil service test and were interested in coming to Grand Island."

Rizzuto described the process of selecting Konovitz's successor as "time-consuming."

"We had a big decision to make. We took this decision very seriously. It was for the whole community. We wanted the best fit that we could get for Grand Island," Rizzuto explained.

Covley began her career at the Watertown Flower Memorial Library as a technical adult services librarian. She has worked for the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system since 1987. "She has worked in many capacities, including branch manager," Rizzuto said. "She has always worked in the central library in downtown Buffalo," since moving to this area, Rizzuto said.

Covley's current position in the library system is "division manager for information services."

"We feel that our community will be in good hands with Pat at the helm," Rizzuto said.
