Giving back to your community can be fun. That is something Lewiston-Porter students know very well. For the fifth year in a row, teachers, students and families from the Primary Education Center participated in The Lew-Port Turkey Trot. This year's event raised $927 for Niagara Hospice.

The Turkey Trot was held at the Lewiston-Porter High School track on Tuesday, Nov. 24, before the start of school. More than 300 participants ran, walked and trotted around the track to support the event. The trot kicked off with music from the high school band and encouragement from the high school cheerleaders. Paul Beatty Jr. and Race Management Solutions donated finish line services.

In the weeks leading up to the event, students sold turkey "feathers" for a dollar each to raise money for Niagara Hospice. Physical education teacher Cindy Sanoian, who helped organize the event, said, "Our students and their families had a great time. This event is a great way to give back to the community while keeping active and having fun."

Niagara Hospice has provided end-of-life comfort, care and support since 1988 to more than 25,000 Niagara County individuals and families faced with terminal illness. No one is ever denied hospice care due to inability to pay.
