Every year, volunteers from the Historical Association of Lewiston wash, wax and buff Lewiston's bronze monuments to keep them looking new. Holding their buckets and brushes this year at the Freedom Crossing Monument at the river are, from left, Peter Henderson, Becky Wydysh, Skip Hauth, Pam Hauth, Tim Henderson and Susan Geissler.

The group also waxed the Tuscarora Heroes Monument at Portage Road and Center Street, as well.

The monuments are the most photographed objects in Lewiston and are visited by thousands each year. Live webcams broadcast streaming images from both sites on the Internet.

"The monuments are holding up extremely well and, because they are being faithfully maintained, they look as good as the day they were installed," Henderson said.
