HAL welcomes John Zach and 'History of WNY Radio & Television'

The Historical Association of Lewiston will present "History of WNY Radio & Television." John Zach, author and WBEN 930-AM radio host, will present the history of the local broadcasting industry. The event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston.

Widely acknowledged as "the dean of Western New York radio journalists," Zach is beyond the half-century mark in a distinguished broadcasting career inspired by curious affection for the industry, inspired by a father whose similar curiosity dates back to the halcyon days of wireless. Zach's dad constructed one of the first radio receivers on Buffalo's east side in the 1920s.

Civic-minded, Zach has served on a number of boards, including the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library. He's twice been named "Citizen of the Year." He's also a successful author. His 1988 book, "The Trainman," has attained a cult following over the years. Tattered, worn copies currently sell for close to $100.

Zach is among less than a handful of "working" members in the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
