Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard announced his office will increase the number of DWI patrols on land and sea for the July 4 weekend throughout the county.
There will be additional, dedicated road patrol deputies working in the districts looking for intoxicated or impaired drivers. Additionally, the sheriff's office, with coordination with Stop DWI, will conduct sobriety checkpoints throughout the county.
The sheriff's marine unit also will have added patrols for the long weekend. The marine unit will patrol the area's waterways and hot spots watching for impaired boaters and other safety violations during Operation Dry Water.
During the same holiday period last year, the sheriff's office arrested eight individuals for driving while intoxicated and three for boating while intoxicated.
